Patagonia is having a big past-season sale right now, and I’m genuinely surprised by how many of its coveted core products are marked down between 30 and 40 percent off. That’s right: Rather than just T-shirts in weird, unwearable colors, we’re seeing discounts on worthier items like Black Hole backpacks and Baggies swim shorts. Several hundred different products are on sale across several categories, though, so I’ve sifted through and found the ones that are worth it, including the aforementioned Baggies, packable raincoats, and the jacket our outdoor writer says is the most versatile one that he owns.

Bags and accessories

$153

This gigantic duffel with backpack straps is the ultimate Patagonia product, and it’s rarely on sale. I’ve also seen the chile-red color in person and don’t think the product photos really capture how nice it is — not too earthy, not too bright.

Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L

Patagonia’s Black Hole daypacks are a Strategist staple, and for good reason. For me, the stretchy water-bottle holder is an underrated design feature: It’ll fit a fat Nalgene or skinny Hydroflask.

A cute and useful hip pack for hiking or travel that Sam Sanders counts as one of his favorite things.

Women’s clothing

You won’t regret stocking up on Baggies, especially at this price. This inseam length is the classic one, but never fear — short-shorts are also on sale, below.

Here they are, discounted in multiple colors.

I’m rather intrigued by these pink pull-on pants, which look both comfortable and flattering. Please let me know if you purchase them.

Patagonia Women’s Houdini Jacket
From $65
From $65

Camilla Cho, SVP of e-commerce at Vox Media, owns two of these Houdini Jackets. She says the style is “perfect for exercising outdoors when it’s a bit breezy and great for traveling, since you can stuff the whole thing into the side pocket so it becomes a little pouch that you can throw into a bag.”

It may not feel like it right now, but soon enough, summer will end and pullover weather will return. This retro fleece is a favorite of brand consultant and stylist Laurel Pantin, who writes the shopping newsletter Earl Earl because it “looks like what an ’80s Connecticut dad would wear.”

This shaggier style is on sale, too.

$167

Another quintessential Patagonia product for when fall weather eventually arrives. It packs down super small.

No less than six outdoor experts recommended these warm and durable thermals to me when I compiled our guide to the best women’s long underwear and base layers. Grab the set for under $100.

Men’s clothing

From $39

A favorite of current and former Strategist writers and editors, Patagonia Baggies are the summer short. They’re always worth purchasing when they go on sale.

Happily, both Baggies inseam lengths are discounted. I’m really into this conifer green.

“I will die for (or in) my Patagonia Nano-Air Jacket,” Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa says. “It’s the most versatile outdoor jacket I own. I can wear it for easy hikes in cool weather, or use it as my main insulator or heavy layer on winter days around town. And it’s just downright cozy.”

$230

Mike Radenbaugh, co-founder and CEO of electric-bike company Rad Power Bikesrecommends this jacket because it’s warm and windproof, and the cuffs have elastic that keeps water and wind out.

A status-y fleece for under $100 that you’ll be glad to have purchased come October.

And here’s the vest version. (There are several more colorful options on sale, too.)

Kids’ and baby clothing

These really are just such good swim shorts, especially for rough-and-tumble kids — the ripstop nylon comes in handy.

Strategist senior editor Winnie Yang says you can feel the quality of this hoodie “in the zippers and see it in the stitching for the baffles and seams.”

And she says her son has played in the snow while wearing this bunting, staying dry and toasty. It also makes bundling kids up easier: “My youngest hates getting dressed or changed, so if we can just drop him into an all-in-one outer layer, that cuts down on the time we spend struggling to wrestle him into his clothes.”

The Strategist is designed to surface useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Every product is independently selected by our team of editors, whom you can read about here. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
